About

Pell Mell was an instrumental rock band that formed in 1980 in Portland, Oregon. The band existed in frequent lineup changes for 17 years and seven albums. Pell Mell’s expansive instrumental style drew from many of the 60’s great instrumental bands and served as a pre-cursor to the instrumental, sometimes referred to as “post rock” bands of the 1990’s and 2000’s.

This website serves as the official website for Pell Mell and it’s members– a way to document the history of the band and the future projects and bands of it members.

  1. Just want to say how important growing up with Pell Mell was to my guitar playing and song writing. My favorites from my teens were Pell Mell, 3 Mile Pilot, and John Fahey. Anyway, hope to catch up with the members current bands. Best, Leif

  2. From Bob Beerman:

Hi! We had a show booked before we had a name. We went to the dictionary, randomly opened to the page w/ Pell Mell, and went with it. The name certainly fit the music better then, as more of the songs had a no wave skronk influence. We also set ourselves up for countless ‘Pall Mall’ cigarette references, and of course the other Pell Mell (the german band) and then there’s Pel Mel the Australian band. In it’s favor, it’s catchy, and almost symmetrical.
